Australia is bursting with diversity and there are tons of amazing sites of natural and cultural interests to explore. In fact, it could do with our own selection of world wonders. Experience Oz, Australia’s largest provider of tours and activities, put thoughts into action when they started their national voting campaign to select the ‘7 Wonders of Australia’. Over 50 places were listed for the campaign and Nitmiluk Gorge is one of them.
Nitmiluk Gorge (former Katherine gorge) is part of Nitmiluk National Park, located in North Territory and it is a true diamond in the rough. This beautiful place in North Territory was declared a national park back in 1977 but it wasn’t until 1989 that the land was handed back to the indigenous people, the Jawoyn. These days, the park is managed and operated by the Jawoyn people and visitors can learn a great deal about their culture and traditions.
With its breathtaking sandstone sceneries, dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls and natural spring pools, Nitmiluk Gorge is a place of impeccable beauty and great cultural interest, attracting around 270.000 visitors every year.
Nitmiluk Gorge is actually home to a dozen individual gorges, featuring imposing sand cliffs of over a 100 meters and waterfalls that create natural swim pools, perfect for swimming. Visitors can hike overland, seeing ancient rock art by the Jawoyn people or cruise away on the river, in between sand cliffs and fairytale-like sceneries. There are tons of endangered exotic birds to be spotted as well as sweet water crocodiles. In addition to the hiking trails and river cruises, Nitmiluk Gorge is also working on a mountain bike trail.
The splendid combination of unblemished nature, an intriguing indigenous culture and endangered wildlife are what makes Nitmiluk Gorge a definite wonder of Australia. On top of that, this world wonder is easily accessible, 300 kilometers away from Darwin
Whether going hiking, cruising or Mountain biking through Nitmiluk National Park, the beauty of this natural wonder of Australia is grand and wondrous, indeed!
